The Meizhou Thousand-Buddha Pagoda is an iron pagoda cast in 965. This pagoda is not very tall, only 4.2 meters high, and each side is less than 2 meters long, in a square shape. What is astonishing is that there are 250 large and small Buddha statues cast on each side of the pagoda. In total, there are one thousand Buddhas on all four sides, hence the name. It is a key cultural relic protected in Guangdong Province. The pagoda was originally in Xiuhui Temple and later destroyed. In the early years of Emperor Qianlong’s reign, it was relocated to the mountain in the eastern suburb of Meizhou by Wang Zhefu, an official of Jiaying Prefecture. In 1989, it was moved into the Putong Pagoda Courtyard. In 1990, a new large pagoda with a height of 36 meters and nine floors was built in the Putong Pagoda Courtyard. On the first floor, there is the Thousand-Buddha iron pagoda. From the second to the ninth floors, the inner walls are inlaid with one thousand white marble Buddha statues. On the top floor, there are one thousand gold Buddhas. Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:00 to 17:30.
