The Meng Zhou Cultural Education Foundation has generously donated over 24,000 invaluable Chinese image collections to the Hong Kong History Museum, most of which are photographs from the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, covering a wide range of subjects and themes. This comprehensive collection of Chinese images is extremely rare. The exhibition showcases more than 500 selected pieces from the Meng Zhou Cultural Education Foundation’s Chinese image collection, including significant historical events experienced by China during the Qing Dynasty, such as the Second Opium War, the Self-Strengthening Movement, the First Sino-Japanese War, the invasion by the Eight-Nation Alliance, and the Russo-Japanese War. It also features urban landscapes, historical buildings, and the daily life of people from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China, as well as various photographic materials and formats that reflect the development of early photography. The exhibits include one of the earliest existing Chinese images, taken 180 years ago, as well as iconic works by the most representative Chinese and foreign photographers of the time, glass negatives, stereoscopic photographs, and hand-colored photographs. The Chinese images recorded in the exhibits provide both macro and micro perspectives, making them excellent materials for understanding the face of China a century ago. The exhibition is open from October 23rd to February 3rd, Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10:00-18:00; Saturday and Sunday 10:00-19:00. Performance times and durations are subject to the on-site schedule.
