Miaoguo Temple is located at the southern foot of Songtai Mountain in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province. It is a famous ancient temple in Dong’ou. It was first built in the Shenlong period of the Tang Dynasty (705). It was built by Master Sujue, a generation of grand masters. It flourished in the Song Dynasty. Master Jizhong, a eminent monk, once resided in the abbot’s quarters and greatly enhanced the religious atmosphere. For a time, it became a famous temple for pilgrimages along the southeast coast. Miaoguo Temple was restored and rebuilt in 1983. The reconstruction lasted for more than ten years. Now, the Heavenly Kings Hall, the Mahavira Hall, the Guanyin Pavilion and two buildings are richly decorated with carved beams and painted pillars, resplendent and magnificent. The upturned eaves and dougong are majestic. Zhao Puchu, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, personally inscribed ‘Mahavira Hall’. Sha Menghai, a master of calligraphy, inscribed ‘Miaoguo Temple’. In 1996, Master Nan Huaijin inscribed the plaque ‘Sujue Famous Mountain’, which is dignified, vigorous and glittering. Calligraphers have written plaques and couplets one after another to add luster to Miaoguo Temple. On the main pillars of the temple hall, there is a couplet written by the former abbot, Elder Monk Xuesheng before his death: ‘Jingguang Pagoda Courtyard, the sound of Pujue bell, recalling the religious atmosphere of the Tang Dynasty, Yongjia is unique. Oupu Yunfeng, Xiatan moonlight, imagining that in the Song Dynasty, Monk Dao Ji and Miaoguo Temple have the same aspiration.’ In the back hall, there is a couplet by the current abbot, Master Dachong: ‘Seven treasures are majestic. A small corner of the mountain hides the world. The Three Vehicles provide shade. The sound of the tide surges from all directions on the earth.’ Opening hours: From January 1st to December 31st, 06:00 – 18:30.
