With the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, Mituo Zen Temple, like Yunyang Zhang Fei Temple, is situated below the water level of the dam and is one of the more challenging temples to relocate in the reservoir area. To rescue, protect, and develop the valuable historical and cultural heritage of the Three Gorges reservoir area, from 1996 to 1998, with the approval of the original Tiancheng District People’s Government and the Wan County Municipal People’s Government, it was decided to relocate Mituo Zen Temple to the hillside of Dulishan, one of the “Wanzhou Eight Scenic Spots” (“Duli Motian”), which is also a renowned religious site, Beishan Temple.

Beishan Temple has a superior geographical location, convenient transportation, surrounded by water on three sides and backed by mountains. It can be described as a “Fairy Mountain and Pearl Pavilion” and “Pearl of the Yangtze River”. The newly built Mituo Zen Temple is situated on the dragon’s spine of Beishan Temple, covering an area of 16.2 acres and with a construction area of 9,500 square meters. It consists of the main hall, side halls, Zen rooms, Dharma hall, scripture library, prayer tower, Seven Star cluster, and reception building, service department, etc.Beishan Temple: A Multifaceted Destination in Wanzhou
