Zhang Cangshui (1620 – 1664), with the courtesy name Xuanzhu and given name Huangyan, is a famous national hero in the late Ming Dynasty. He is known as one of the ‘Three Heroes of the West Lake’ together with Yu Qian and Yue Fei. The Zhang Cangshui Memorial Temple located near Taiziwan in the West Lake was built for him. His tomb is also not far away. The memorial temple is composed of steles, portraits, plaques, paintings and couplets, with a strong sense of the times and artistic appeal. There are ten steles in the temple, engraved with Mr. Zhang Cangshui’s deeds, poems and inscriptions by later generations respectively. Eight murals vividly depict Zhang Cangshui’s life of worrying about the country and loving the people. The plaques written by famous contemporary calligraphers Sha Menghai and Qi Gong add solemnity and dignity to the ancestral temple. The combination of the ancestral temple and the tomb is simple and quiet. Surrounded by green pines and cypresses and with small bridges and flowing water, the scenery is quite good and very suitable for a peaceful tour. Opening hours: Open from 08:30 to 16:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays to Sundays throughout the year.
