South Pool Street is located in Dongcheng District, Beijing, on the east side of the Palace Museum. The south end of South Pool Street starts at the ruins of the imperial city wall. It was once a forbidden area for the royal family. In the Ming Dynasty, this place served as the southern inner part of the Forbidden City. There were mostly internal official supervision offices and central government offices in the area.
In the late Qing Dynasty, it was called the South Chang Street outside Donghua Gate and later renamed South Pool Street. No. 136 South Pool Street is the imperial archives of the Ming and Qing dynasties, namely Huangshicheng. It houses important classics such as the Veritable Records of the Ming and Qing dynasties and the Imperial Genealogy. For the needs of fire prevention and moisture prevention, the main hall and steps of Huangshicheng are all made of bricks and stones, which are both spacious, majestic, firm and practical. South Pool is a pilot project for the renovation of Beijing’s hutongs. Many old courtyards have been renovated. The street is very spacious and you can see the corner towers of the Forbidden City. There are many small shops on the street, but it is a place of tranquility in the midst of bustling activities and a relatively comfortable place.
