The existing Nanjing City Wall was built in the early Ming Dynasty (1366 – 1386). It was constructed after Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang of the Ming Dynasty listened to Zhu Sheng’s suggestion of ‘building high walls’. It is 10 kilometers long from north to south and 5.67 kilometers wide from east to west, with a perimeter of 33.676 kilometers. What makes the Nanjing City Wall different from other city walls in China is its irregular shape. There were originally 13 city gates in Nanjing City in the Ming Dynasty. Now only a few remain. Among them, Zhonghua Gate is a relatively large castle with three floors up and down and a total of 27 hiding caves for soldiers, which can hide more than 3,000 soldiers. In the Ming Dynasty, it was used to defend against invading enemies.
