Gan Xi’s Former Residence, also known as the Gan Family Compound or Gan Xi’s Mansion, is a historic site built by Gan Fu in Jiangning during the early years of the Daoguang Emperor’s reign in the Qing Dynasty. Gan Xi, the second son of Gan Fu, was a renowned literati of the late Qing Dynasty, who not only passed the imperial examination but also had a prolific literary output. This site was rediscovered in 1982 during a cultural relics survey conducted by Nanjing’s cultural relics department and was subsequently restored to effectively utilize and showcase the residential style of the Jiangnan region during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Nanjing Folk Museum was established here and opened to the public in November 1992. In 1995, it was designated as a cultural relics protection unit by Jiangsu Province, and in 2001, it was listed as a patriotic education base under government jurisdiction. Currently, it is combined with the historical old street of Xinanli to form a distinctive folk culture street.
