Nanming Mountain is located 2 kilometers south of the city, facing the urban area across the Ou River. The temples and pavilions on the mountain are nestled among the dense forests, with historical sites revealed amidst the red cliffs, earning the reputation of ‘the beauty of Kuocang’. Halfway up the mountain, there is a steep cliff standing upright, above which is the Shangqi Pavilion, commonly known as the Half-Mountain Pavilion.
There is also a huge rock more than ten zhang in length, spanning across the rocks, called the Stone Beam. The Stone Beam, the Yin Yue Pool below it, the Gaoyang Cave slightly above, and the Yunge House on the mountaintop all preserve numerous ancient inscriptions, primarily from the Song Dynasty authors. To the west of the Yin Yue Pool is the Renshou Temple, built during the Song Dynasty. The scenic area covers a total area of 12. 2 square kilometers, characterized by its peculiar rocks and waters, tranquil mountains and forests, cliff inscription art, and She ethnic customs. Nanming Mountain is abundant in shaped rocks, stone bridges, and waterfalls, with the stone scenery being particularly unique, making it a famous mountain in southern Zhejiang. Nanming Mountain is also known for its cultural landscapes, especially the cliff inscriptions, among which the handwriting of Ge Hong, Shen Kuo, and Mi Fu is exceptionally precious. Nanming Mountain Cliff Inscriptions: Nanming Mountain Cliff Inscriptions were listed as a provincial cultural preservation unit in 1981. There are currently 58 cliff inscriptions, mainly distributed in three places: Stone Beam, Gaoyang Cave, and Yunge Cliff. The Stone Beam stretches for several zhang, suspended in mid-air, metaphorically described as ‘half cloud’ and ‘hanging rainbow’, with 20 inscriptions; Gaoyang Cave has 15 cliff inscriptions, mostly relics from the Song people. Yunge Cliff, located at the top of Nanming Mountain, is a cliff about 16 meters high and 66 meters wide. A four-cornered pavilion is built on the cliff. There are 12 inscriptions, with the words ‘Ling Chong’ on the back of the cliff, written in a vigorous calligraphy, said to be by Ge Hong of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. There is also the three-character inscription ‘Nanming Mountain’ written by the great Northern Song Dynasty calligrapher and painter Mi Fu.
