Nanshe Village covers an area of approximately 6.9 square kilometers and has a current registered population of over three thousand people. It is one of the larger villages in the Chashan area and Dongguan. The ancient village, which maintains the layout of the Ming and Qing dynasties, has 22 ancestral halls and over 200 ancient residences, making it a rare site of Ming and Qing architecture and culture in the Pearl River Delta.
During the Ming and Qing eras, Nanshe produced numerous talents, including nine Jinshi (advanced scholars). To this day, it preserves a large number of undamaged buildings and artistically valuable carved cultural relics. Notable among these are the ancient walls built with rammed earth and red stone foundations and constructed with blue bricks, as well as the traditional three-room, three-deep courtyard layout of the Xie Family Ancestral Hall, which are representative structures worth visiting.
The Centenarian Pavilion was built in memory of four centenarians. Its flying eaves and dougong brackets exude a simple grandeur. The reconstruction of this pavilion used brick and wood, with exquisitely carved mortise and tenon joints, strictly adhering to the original design, thus preserving the style of that era. Adjacent to it is the Centenarian Ancestor Hall, which was converted from an ancient house inhabited by a centenarian according to his last wishes.
The Zi Zheng Mansion is the residence of Xie Yuanjun, a Jinshi of the Guangxu era who served as the head of the Ministry of Rites. It is located on the slope of a hill, with stone steps and railings that still maintain the grandeur of that time. The flower brackets on both corridors are exquisitely beautiful, and the central hall’s hanging flower door is carved with flowers and birds. The peacock tails and phoenix heads protrude from the wood, making them lifelike.
