Nanxiangtang Temple is located at a strategic pass on the west side of one of the eight ancient Taihang mountain passes, ‘Fukou Pass’ (now in Xizhifang Village). It is composed of grottoes, pavilions leaning against the mountain, halls and ancient towers. According to the existing stele of the Sui Dynasty, it was built in 565 AD and has a history of more than 1400 years. There are currently 7 grottoes, with more than 3700 large and small statues in total.
There are as many as 38 inscriptions with dated records. The grottoes were all carved during the Northern Qi Dynasty. There are also many rock-carved statues supplemented in the Sui and Tang Dynasties and other dynasties on the inner and outer walls of the grottoes and on the nearby rock walls. There are Song Dynasty towers, halls from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and century-old ancient trees in the temple. Opening hours: Open all year round from 09:00 to 17:30.
