Naozhou Lighthouse is located on Ma’anshan of Naozhou Island at an altitude of 81.6 meters. In 1898, French colonizers constructed this lighthouse, which took two years and two months to complete. It is one of the only two crystal lighthouses in the world and is renowned as one of the three major lighthouses alongside the London and Cape of Good Hope lighthouses.
Standing at 23 meters tall with a base width of 5 meters and a top width of 4 meters, the entire structure is built from麻 stone. The construction method involved stacking the stones without the use of mortar, ensuring a seamless and harmonious fit between each stone block. The lower part of the lighthouse is a square base, the upper part is a conical shape, and the top features a bulbous lamp room that protrudes from the body of the lighthouse. Inside the base of the lamp room, there is a sealed, rotating tray with mercury, supporting the entire lamp frame.
The frame is composed of over 160 arc-shaped crystal prisms, forming a parabolic reflector with a focal length of 2 meters. Opposite the centers of the two circular ends of the frame, there is a convex lens installed. In the middle of the frame, a 400-kilowatt fluorescent lamp is suspended. The frame is motor-driven, rotating at a speed of one full circle every 12 seconds, continuously.
The powerful beam of light passes through the crystal prisms, refracting at different positions and angles, before converging on the two convex lenses and radiating horizontally, with a range of 26 nautical miles.
The lighthouse is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
