The National Costume Museum of Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology is a museum of costumes and also a cultural research institution integrating collection, display, scientific research and teaching. It is one of the better clothing museums in China. It collects more than 10,000 pieces of clothing, accessories and fabrics of all ethnic groups in China. It also houses nearly 1,000 precious life pictures of Yi, Tibetan and Qiang people in the 1930s.
The museum has seven exhibition halls and a Chinese traditional costume craft inheritance hall for teenagers and the public to learn and understand the traditional skills of national costumes and conduct interactive exchanges. In the metalwork jewelry hall, there are many silver ornaments, such as headdresses, earrings, necklaces, chest ornaments, bracelets, rings and silver bubbles, silver flowers, silver pieces and silver bells inlaid on clothes. In the ethnic minority costume hall, there are ethnic costumes of Manchu, Mongolian, Tibetan, Oroqen, Ewenki, Tajik, Kazakh, Kirgiz, Yugur and other ethnic groups. There are various styles such as robes, long gowns, dresses, front-opening skirts and gowns, front-opening skirts and trousers, front-opening skirts and trousers, inclined-opening skirts and through-head clothes. In the textile, dyeing and embroidery hall, there are national costumes of textile, embroidery and batik. The old photo hall exhibits a batch of ethnic investigation pictures in the 1930s, taken by the famous ethnologist and photographer Zhuang Xueben. The content of these photos taken by Mr. Zhuang is very rich, reflecting the actual situation of social history, economy, religious culture and living customs of Yi and Qiang people at that time. In the Miao costume hall, from the fine and gorgeous Shidong Miao costume to the original and rough Nandan Miao costume, the styles are different. The Han costume hall exhibits different types of costumes from different regions in modern times. They form a beautiful landscape of this grand event and also fully reflect the school’s teaching purpose of ‘combining national costume culture with modern design concepts’. The opening hours: Open from 08:30 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 16:30 on Tuesday and Thursday throughout the year; open from 13:30 to 16:30 on Saturday throughout the year. Admission stops 30 minutes before closing. Closed on national statutory holidays, winter and summer vacations.
