Nengren Temple: A Sanctuary in the Heart of Chongqing

Nengren Temple is located on Zhonghua Road in the bustling Jiefangbei business district. Surrounded by towering skyscrapers, it is the only nunnery in Chongqing city. Originally known as San Tang Hall and Haiyun Temple, it has a history of over three hundred years and is affiliated with the Linji sect of Buddhism. It is the dharma heir of the venerable monk Hui Kai from the grand hall of Hua Yan Temple. The temple complex consists of four main halls: the Book-Carrying Hall, the Guanyin Hall, the Ancestral Hall, and the Chan Hall. In 1926, under the leadership of Abbess Nengliang, the temple was transformed from a family temple to a public monastery. Before liberation, there were more than ten resident nuns in the temple, attracting a large number of devout followers. There was a constant stream of worshippers and offerings. Today, on the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month, many devotees come to burn incense and worship Buddha. In addition, the temple offers affordable and delicious vegetarian meals to visitors during lunchtime. The temple is open to the public from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM all year round, subject to the actual situation on any given day.
