Ningchang Ancient Town is one of the first batch of historical and cultural towns announced by Chongqing City. It is located in Wuxi County, Chongqing, nestled against the mountains and waters, with a tranquil and beautiful scenery and a simple folk custom. It is also one of the earliest salt-producing areas in China. With a salt-making history of over 4000 years, it was once a paradise in ancient times where people lived without weaving or farming, yet they had clothes and food. It was the homeland and capital of the once prosperous Wu Xian Kingdom. Due to its salt production, it historically established jurisdictions such as prefectures, supervisions, states, and counties. The architecture in Ningchang Ancient Town is characterized by ‘stilt houses’ supported by slanted wooden beams, built along the river, exuding an antique charm and unique flavor. Ancient buildings and residences stretch along the Houxi River for 3-4 kilometers, commonly referred to as ‘Seven and a Half Miles Long Street’. The Queen’s Stockade on the southern hillside of the town and the Peach Blossom Stockade on the western mountaintop were the strongholds of Li Zicheng’s general He Zizhen during the resistance against the Qing Dynasty. Opening hours are subject to the actual operating status on the day.
