Niutou Mountain National Forest Park is located 60 kilometers outside Wuyi City, known as the ‘Little Jiuzhaigou of Jiangnan’, it is renowned for its cliffs, streams, and green pools, possessing a certain charm. However, it is slightly inferior to Jiuzhaigou. Due to inconvenient public transportation, most visitors to Niutou Mountain arrive by private car, keeping the number of tourists moderate. The journey from the entrance to the core scenic area is approximately 5 kilometers by car, with visitors able to drive directly to the parking lot at the foot of the mountain.
The scenic area also offers three free shuttle services daily between the entrance and the core area. Adjacent to the parking lot, there is a restaurant and a mountain lodge hotel; the hot spring hotel near the entrance offers better conditions and has hot springs available for guests who consider staying overnight. To the left of the parking lot lies the hiking trail to Houshan Wangniu Peak. If arriving in the afternoon and planning to stay, one might consider taking a walk in the rear mountain and then soaking in the hot spring at night, before heading right the next day to the Shimen Gorge entrance to climb Tianshi Peak, visit Tianshi Hall, and walk across the Golden Lock Bridge, which are the main attractions of the scenic area. From the Shimen Gorge entrance past Yuxian Lake to the Qixi Bridge, the path is essentially straight, accompanied by clear pools and streams, making for an easy walk. After crossing Qixi Bridge, there is a fork in the road, both leading to Tianshi Peak and Tianshi Hall, one going uphill and the other downhill. To the left is the classic and thrilling tourist boardwalk, which ends at the Golden Lock Bridge, and continuing upwards past the ‘One Line Sky’ leads to the summit and Tianshi Hall.
The tourist boardwalk itself is suspended on the cliffside halfway up the mountain, offering a distant view of the long Golden Lock Bridge spanning between two cliffs and the opposite Tianshi Peak, exuding a grand and imposing presence, also a wonderful angle for photography. Although the Golden Lock Bridge appears thrilling, one will find it quite stable and sturdy when walking on it, so there is no need for excessive worry. The ‘One Line Sky’ section that follows is steep, but upon reaching the summit, the sudden view of the vast landscape makes all the previous efforts worthwhile.
At the Tianshi Hall on the mountain, one can offer incense and pray, though there may be additional charges. It takes about 2 hours to hike up the mountain, which can be somewhat tiring, but the downhill path is flatter, allowing one to return to Qixi Bridge at the foot of the mountain in just over an hour. There are several restrooms on the mountain, but almost no shops selling items, so it is necessary to bring water and snacks for the hike.
