Old Xiamen Stories – A Historical Private Museum on Gulangyu Island

Old Xiamen Stories is located at No. 38 Huangyan Road, Gulangyu Island, and is transformed from an old villa. Originally the site of a bank, it has now become a private exhibition hall. The operator, a compatriot from Taiwan named Hong Mingzhang, has acquired most of the collections locally.
Old Xiamen Stories consists of two old villas and two courtyards on the front side. The front building has been converted into a museum that condenses hundreds of years of Xiamen’s history, including tea ceremonies, banks, academies, opera, and the list of top scholars; the rear building has been transformed into a distinctive and antique-rich hotel; the front courtyard displays various antique sculptures and crafts; the side courtyard is shaded and tranquil, providing a cool retreat.

The entire museum is divided into 20 smaller pavilions, including Consulate District, Court of Mixed Governance, Public Works Bureau, Church, School, Foreign Firms, Gulangyu’s Commerce, Foreign Residences, Utensils, and Gulangyu’s Celebrity Hall, each showcasing a wealth of historical artifacts. Additionally, seven or eight historical scenes from the past have been reconstructed. Opening hours are from 8:00 to 18:00, with the last admission at 18:00.
