Located near the Daguangba Reservoir within the territory of Dongfang City, approximately 60 kilometers away from Bayu, lies the Ou Xian Ridge, also known as the Nine Peaks of Ou Niang. On the mountain, there is a cave named Ou Xian Cave, which is unfathomably deep with swirling waters and waves crashing against the cave’s cliffs. Legend has it that in ancient times, a crow spirit residing in this stone cave would often emerge to harm the common people.

One day, the crow spirit captured a beautiful Li ethnic girl named Ou Niang and brought her into the cave. On the third day of the third lunar month, Ou Niang’s beloved, A Gui, armed with a sharp knife and a bow and arrow, went up the mountain to rescue her, only to be killed by the crow spirit. Overwhelmed with grief, Ou Niang avenged A Gui by killing the crow spirit while it was asleep, thus ridding the people of a great evil.

Ou Niang remained unmarried for life, and on the third day of the third lunar month each year, she would go to Ou Xian Cave to sing the love songs she and A Gui used to sing. To honor Ou Niang, the Li people named the cave Ou Niang Cave, and the mountain was also called the Nine Peaks of Ou Niang. Surrounding unmarried Li ethnic youth would gather in their finest attire on Ou Xian Ridge on this day, singing love songs to find their beloved, which eventually evolved into the traditional festival known as ‘March Third’.
