Paiyun Hall Scenic Area is located in the middle of the southern slope of Wanshou Mountain and is an important core landscape architectural group on the north-south central axis of the Summer Palace. The main hall was built on the foundation of the original Mahavira Hall of the Dabao’en Yanshou Temple and was used for Empress Dowager Cixi’s birthday celebrations. The name of the hall originates from the poem by Jin Dynasty poet Guo Pu, ‘Immortals emerge through the clouds, only to see the golden and silver platforms’, implying that this place is a dwelling for immortals and a land of eternal youth.
The current furnishings inside the hall are in their original state during Empress Dowager Cixi’s longevity celebration. The main buildings of the Paiyun Hall central axis scenic area are built along the mountain slope, arranged from south to north and from bottom to top, consisting of ten groups of buildings. The opening hours are subject to the actual opening status on the day.Paiyun Hall
