Panggezhuang Town is located in the southern part of Beijing and the central part of Daxing District. It is 10 kilometers away from Huangcun Satellite City, only 20 kilometers away from the South Third Ring Road of the city, and 25.5 kilometers away from Yongding Gate in Beijing. The Jingkai Expressway and the Jingjiu Railway run through the town from north to south, and the planned Highway 7 Ring crosses the territory from east to west, making transportation extremely convenient.
The town covers an area of 109.3 square kilometers with 4643.47 hectares of arable land. The permanent population of the town is 42,000, of which 35,900 are agricultural population. It governs 53 natural villages.
In 1996, the town was listed as a ‘Ministry of Construction Small Town Construction Pilot Town’ by the Ministry of Construction of China. In 1997, Panggezhuang Town was approved by the Beijing Municipal Government as a ‘Beijing Municipal Small Town Construction Pilot Town’. In 2004, Panggezhuang Town was rated as ‘National Beautiful Environment Small Town’ by the State Environmental Protection Administration.
Panggezhuang Town is known nationwide as the hometown of Chinese watermelons, which has made Beijing and the whole country aware of Panggezhuang. The town supports half of its agriculture with the sweet melon industry. Nearly 30,000 acres of sweet melons are planted annually, producing nearly 80 million kilograms per year. Panggezhuang Town has turned sweet melons into an agricultural boutique and a major industry in the rural economy. Brands like Jing Pang and Song Bao Sen become popular in the capital.
