Pearl Spring, also known as ‘Pearl Spring Spray Jade,’ is a renowned and central attraction within the Pearl Spring landscape, situated in the Caishi River area of Pearl Spring Township, Yanqing County. It is conveniently located next to the Pearl Spring Resort and Pearl Spring Villa.
Historically, ‘Pearl Spring Spray Jade’ was celebrated as one of the eight scenic spots of Yanqing during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The legend behind its name is particularly intriguing: it is said that during the Northern Expedition of Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty, he tasted the spring water and was so impressed that he named it ‘Pearl Spring Spray Jade’.
The park of ‘Pearl Spring Spray Jade’ is a vibrant garden that boasts a variety of characteristic herbs and flowers. Among them are verbena, lavender, cosmos, perilla, butterfly bush, wheat straw chrysanthemum, small lily, marigold, and many others. These plants compete in beauty and fragrance, creating a sensory feast throughout the garden. The paths interlacing among the flower beds invite visitors to stroll and be enveloped by the vibrant display of colors and fragrances, which have a truly uplifting effect on the spirit.
At the heart of the park, the jade-green spring water in the well may not appear remarkable at first glance. However, upon closer inspection, one can observe clusters of bubbling bubbles continuously emerging in the water, resembling broken pearls. This phenomenon becomes even more fascinating if someone shouts loudly near the well; the ‘pearls’ will noticeably increase, and the bubbling speed will accelerate. When onlookers chant in unison and clap in rhythm, the spring water seems to ‘respond’: bubbles surge up from the bottom of the pool, with thousands of pearls rolling and rushing upwards, creating an effect akin to a boiling pot. This interactive and enchanting feature of the spring water is a sight to behold and adds a unique charm to the Pearl Spring experience.The mystery of ‘Pearl Spring Spray Jade’ lies in the water’s rich content of minerals such as calcium and magnesium, as well as carbon dioxide gas, which cause varying amounts of bubbles to emerge with changes in external pressure. Surrounding the strange spring are lavender, cosmos, mint, chamomile, perilla, butterfly bush, wheat straw chrysanthemum, small lily, marigold, and many other types of flowers, forming a theme park of over 1300 acres. During the summer and autumn seasons, the area is filled with vibrant colors and floating fragrances, truly a feast for the senses.
