Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian Park

The Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian Park is located in the Fangshan District, southwest of Beijing. It is renowned worldwide for the discovery of the first Peking Man skullcap, which dates back to 500,000 to 700,000 years ago, on December 2, 1929, pushing human history forward by half a million years. Subsequent excavations have revealed the activities of the ‘New Cave Man’ who lived 100,000 years ago and the ‘Shandingdong Man’ who lived 10,000 years ago, along with a plethora of ancient animal fossils, making this site a crucial base for the study of ancient humans and ancient biology.

On March 4, 1961, the State Council listed it as one of the first national key cultural relics protection units. On December 11, 1987, UNESCO included the Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian in the World Cultural Heritage List.
