Located on Renmin Road, the People’s Assembly Hall was constructed in the 1950s and is a fine example of an ancient-style national architecture complex, also one of the iconic structures of Chongqing. It features architectural characteristics from the Ming and Qing dynasties, with a traditional symmetrical layout along a central axis, and its exterior is modeled after the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests in the Beijing Temple of Heaven.
Initially named the ‘Southwest Military and Political Conference Hall’, it was officially renamed the ‘Southwest Administrative Committee Assembly Hall’ upon completion, and in 1955 it was renamed the ‘Chongqing People’s Assembly Hall’, a name it has held ever since. The Assembly Hall now serves as a theater and conference center, hosting meetings of Chongqing’s People’s Congress and Party Congress. After Chongqing became a direct-controlled municipality, the area in front of the Assembly Hall was transformed into a People’s Square with lawns and fountains. At night, the Assembly Hall is beautifully illuminated by lights, and many local elderly women dance in the square in front of the hall. Opposite the Assembly Hall is the China Three Gorges Museum, which can be visited together. Opening hours are from 08:00 to 18:00 all year round.
