Songlin Ancient Temple is located at the foot of Songlin Peak in the suburbs of Yixi Town. The origin of the temple is unknown, and it is also not known when it was abandoned. During the “Cultural Revolution”, when the Dongxi River was opened, a stone statue of Weituo Bodhisattva and a round stone pedestal were unearthed in the low-lying area of the abandoned temple. There are six characters engraved on it: “Monk of Kaishan Assembly Hall”.

Villagers therefore also call the temple by the name of “Kaishan”. According to expert research, it is a stone carving cultural relic before the Sui and Tang Dynasties, so we know its long history. In May 1993, Lin Xiyan and Ke Zirong, a couple, accompanied Master Hongsheng to the temple to pay respects to the sacred mountains. Seeing that the temple mountain has extraordinary spirit and the woods are whirling.

Although the temple is abandoned, the mountain it leans against is majestic. The mountain ranges on both sides meander and surround the mountain gate, resembling dragons and elephants protecting the temple. The lake in front of the temple is like a mirror, and the transverse embankment protects the foundation. Looking from afar, famous cities and mountains are all in full view, extremely beautiful.

Subsequently, they donated solely to build three universal pagodas and a merit hall, etc., which have now been completed and put into use. In the past, a famous person in Chaozhou left a chant for this place: “Resting one’s head on Songlin Peak, stepping on Lianhua Lake. Holding Bijia in the left hand and supporting a gourd in the right hand.” Awesome! It is truly a famous scenic spot and historical site.

With a great vow, they donated solely to build three universal pagodas and a merit hall, etc., which have now been completed and put into use. Now, with a Bodhi mind, they donate to build the “Great Compassion Hall” as an initiative. It is hoped that all good believers from all directions will jointly make a vow to build “Songlin Ancient Temple”. Opening hours: Open all year round from 8:00 to 18:00.

Tips: Do not eat meat, scallions, garlic, leeks in the temple.
