Pingshan Terraced Fields Tourism Area is located in Pingshan Village, Dadong Town, Dapu County, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, at the junction of four counties in Fujian and Guangdong provinces. It is a national tourist attraction that integrates ‘viewing terraced field scenery, drinking magical spring water, visiting the former residence of generals, and touring characteristic residences’. Pingshan Village has a profound historical and cultural heritage, rich humanistic resources, numerous cultural relics, and a beautiful natural ecology.
It is known as ‘Yuanyang of Guangdong’ due to its primitive-shaped, beautifully lined thousand-acre terraced fields built at the end of the Yuan Dynasty. In 2011, Pingshan Village was rated as ‘Ancient Village of Guangdong Province’, and at the same time, Pingshan Terraced Fields were rated as the Guangdong Province Rural Tourism Demonstration Base and Provincial Photographers’ Field Creation Base. In 2015, it was rated as one of the top ten tourism and flower viewing bases in Meizhou City. The construction of Pingshan Terraced Fields began at the end of the Yuan Dynasty and was completed in the early Qing Dynasty. It is said that Wen Magong moved from Ninghua Shibi Village to Pingshan, and he opened up terraced fields in this barren mountain wilderness to start a new life. With the spirit of Yu Gong moving mountains, he cultivated the wilderness into awe-inspiring terraced fields. Pingshan Terraced Fields have a history of more than 600 years, with a total area of more than 1200 acres, of which the main part covers more than 680 acres. The slopes are mostly between 25 to 65 degrees, cascading from the foot of the mountain to the top, and continuously extending from one mountain to another. There are fewer than tens of levels and more than a thousand levels, with different shapes and crisscrossing ridges. Ancient people once called the terraced fields ‘fertile fields’ and ‘horse hill dancing’. Here, we can see the beautiful scenery that cities cannot see, hear the stories that cities cannot hear, and taste the delicious food that cities cannot taste. Pingshan Terraced Fields have different landscapes throughout the four seasons. Every year in March and April is the season when rapeseed flowers bloom. In May and June, Pingshan Terraced Fields hold the Water Release Festival and agricultural parent-child activities. In August and September, it is the season for rice growth. In October, on one side, it is the time when the rice panicles are ripe, with golden rice fields and heavy rice panicles swaying in the wind, creating a boundless golden and hopeful terraced field scenery. On the other side, it is the colorful and beautiful but not delicate flower of happiness – the Gansu flower. Opening hours are all year round from 08:00 to 17:30.
