The inscription ‘Entering Samadhi’ was written by Dong Qichang, a renowned calligrapher, painter, and literary figure of the Ming Dynasty. Historical records show that many cultural celebrities and eminent monks have followed this path to practice Zen and worship Buddha. Baihua Hermitage, which began construction in the 40th year of the Wanli era (1612), is one of the ancient structures on Mount Putuo. Many eminent monks and cultural celebrities once gathered here to compose poetry, enjoy tea, and appreciate the moon. Within the hermitage, there was once a ‘Zhenxie Spring’ and a stone tablet inscribed by Shi Hao, a literary figure from the Song Dynasty. Today, the historic site of ‘Zhenxie Spring’ remains, though the spring itself has been abandoned; the tablet is preserved in a resident’s home and is among the oldest stone inscriptions existing on Mount Putuo. The site is open all year round, accessible 24/7, with specific operating conditions subject to daily opening status.
