Qianliang Hutong, situated in Dongcheng District of Beijing, stretches from Dongsi North Street in the east to Dafo Temple East Street in the west, running in an east-west direction. It is essentially parallel to Yuqun Hutong to the north. This historic alleyway was formed during the Yuan Dynasty and, in the Ming Dynasty, it was part of Renshou Fang and was known as ‘Qiantang Hutong’.

During the Qing Dynasty, the Ministry of Revenue established the Baoquan Bureau South Factory here, which was responsible for minting coins and also the place where salaries were distributed. The term for salary and provisions in the Qing Dynasty was ‘Qianliang’, hence the name Qianliang Hutong was adopted.
