The Qijiang Farmer’s Printmaking Institute, one of the eight major public welfare projects initiated by the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government in 2005, is located on the north side of Jiulong Square in the new district of Qijiang. It covers an area of 4.17 mu, with a construction area of 2,825 square meters and a four-story full-frame structure, with a total investment of 3.5 million yuan.

The institute focuses on Qijiang farmer’s printmaking, conducting creative activities, guiding author training, collecting printmaking works and other folk crafts, organizing exhibitions, and carrying out internal and external exchange activities. Qijiang farmer’s printmaking originated from the woodblock New Year pictures during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The works are inspired by the production and life practices of the vast number of farmers, and the expression techniques are based on simple painting methods, while extensively absorbing local ethnic folk art techniques. These include widely circulated folk arts such as wood carving, stone carving, cloth applique, embroidery, woodblock New Year pictures, paper-cutting, and blue calico printing. The works are characterized by their rich ethnic and folk customs and life atmosphere.

The works exhibit a simple and naive, exaggerated and romantic artistic effect, and possess a high artistic value. They have been exhibited in more than 20 countries and regions including the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom. To date, more than 1,500 works have been collected by the National Art Museum of China, provincial (municipal) museums, Chinese embassies abroad, and foreign art museums. In 1988, Qijiang District was named the ‘Chinese Modern Folk Painting Township’ by the Ministry of Culture, and since 2003, Qijiang farmer’s printmaking has been designated as a cultural exchange gift by Chongqing.
