The Western Qing Tombs are located in Yixian County, Baoding, Hebei Province. It is about 140 kilometers away from Beijing. It is the burial place of four emperors of the Qing Dynasty, Yongzheng, Jiaqing, Daoguang, and Guangxu, as well as many imperial concubines, princes, and princes. The mausoleum buildings here are grand and magnificent. The palaces, divine roads, sculptures, etc. are either magnificent or exquisite and very rich. The interior decorations of the tombs are also mostly magnificent. You can come here to visit and understand the once history. In addition, a large number of pine trees have been planted in the mausoleum area and have now become a magnificent ancient pine forest with a quiet and simple environment.
There are many tombs in the Western Qing Tombs. At present, the main ones worth seeing and open for visit are the Tai Tomb where Emperor Yongzheng is buried, the Mu Tomb of Emperor Daoguang, the Chong Tomb of Emperor Guangxu, and the Changxi Tomb of the empress of Jiaqing. In addition, there is also a Tibetan Buddhist temple, Yongfu Temple, next to the Chong Tomb for worship. Looking at buildings such as the divine road and the main hall outside the tomb is free of charge. You need to buy a ticket to enter the palace. Each tomb and temple sells tickets separately. At the same time, there are also joint tickets sold by the scenic spot that can be used to visit all scenic spots within one day. The main gate of the Western Qing Tombs is located at the Dahongmen beside National Highway G112. Several major tombs and temples are scattered among the mountains on the north side of Dahongmen. They are relatively far apart from each other. The Chong Tomb on the east side is about ten kilometers away from the Mu Tomb on the west side. It is more convenient to drive when visiting the Western Qing Tombs area. There are also battery cars running between the tombs in the scenic area. The battery cars are operated privately and the price needs to be negotiated. A one-way ride costs about 10 yuan. The conventional and relatively smooth tour sequence is to visit the Tai Tomb first, then walk to the Changxi Tomb. After visiting, take a car to the Mu Tomb, and finally take a car to Yongfu Temple and the Chong Tomb for a visit. The Tai Tomb is the main tomb of the Western Qing Tombs. Emperor Yongzheng is buried here. This is also the largest tomb among all the tombs in the Western Qing Tombs. The divine road alone is 2.5 kilometers long (there is a tourist road leading to near the palace gate of the tomb, so you don’t need to walk the entire divine road on foot). Most of the buildings are tall and majestic. Numerous stone carvings, stone statues, and exquisite sculptures are inlaid among them. It is a more suitable place to visit and photograph magnificent buildings. The Changxi Tomb is located to the west of the Tai Tomb. It is the tomb of the empress of Jiaqing. The famous thing in the Western Qing Tombs is the echo wall in the cemetery. Speaking softly from one end of the echo wall, people at the other end can clearly hear it. It is very magical. You can experience it here. The Mu Tomb is on the west side of the Western Qing Tombs, about 5 kilometers away from the Tai Tomb. It is the tomb of Emperor Daoguang. Since the Qing Dynasty had begun to decline when Emperor Daoguang was in power, many buildings such as the Ming Tower and the Shenggong Stele Tower were omitted when building the tomb, making it seem very small in scale. However, the palace is built very exquisitely. In particular, hundreds of dragons carved from golden nanmu are extremely beautiful and worth visiting.Chongling, located on the eastern side of Qing Xi Ling, is several kilometers away from Muling. This is the tomb of Emperor Guangxu, funded by the then Nationalist Government. Its architecture is simpler compared to the other tombs. The underground palace of Chongling was once robbed but is now open for tourists to visit. It is also the only underground palace open for visits within Qing Xi Ling, where one can see the coffins of Emperor Guangxu and Empress Longyu. The sculptures on the stone walls inside the palace are exquisite and worth seeing.
Apart from the aforementioned tombs, Qing Xi Ling also contains many other tombs, including the Changling of Emperor Jiaqing and the Taitungling where the prototype of Zhen Huan, the Empress Dowager, is buried. These are quite famous, although not open for visits, one can appreciate the architecture from the outside and reflect on the vicissitudes of history. The park is planted with a large area of pine trees, which have now grown into towering ancient trees. With few visitors, the environment is very tranquil, making it an excellent place for photography and historical exploration. It is possible to visit all the above-mentioned attractions in one day, but for in-depth exploration or photography enthusiasts, it is recommended to spend two days or visit twice. There are several farmhouses near the Dahongmen and Tailiang, offering affordable prices, with a room costing about tens of yuan, where one can stay or dine.
