The Qingdao International Conference Center is the main venue of the 2018 Qingdao Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. It is located in the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center, the venue for the sailing competition of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It faces the inner bay marina of the Olympic Sailing Center. The exterior design implies ‘taking off to pursue dreams and sailing to lead’. The main body shape of the banquet hall is like a sail in the waves. Both venues are in line with the site environment of ‘integrated landscapes and a seamless blend of sea and sky’, full of marine characteristics.
The foyer on the first floor of the welcome hall is connected to the welcome hall. As an important arrival experience space, the welcome hall is 13.3 meters high and has a usable area of 870 square meters. As soon as guests arrive, they can experience the great-nation demeanor of a spring breeze blowing on their faces and a wide field of vision.
The Yellow River Hall is the venue for the meetings of the eight official member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. It takes an octagonal shape as the spatial modeling foundation, gathering from bottom to top towards the middle, and finally presenting in the form of an octagonal lamp at the top of the ceiling, taking on the beautiful meaning of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s illuminating the way, integrating wisdom and harmony, gathering from all directions, and benefiting the world. As the saying goes, ‘The double-layered pavilion with carved railings is still a pavilion, and the sweet springs converge into the sea, gathering sages from all directions’.
The bilateral conference rooms are located in the southern area on the first floor of the conference center, namely ‘Anren Hall’ and ‘Xinhai Hall’, taking the meanings of ‘The benevolent find peace in benevolence and act virtuously’ and ‘Making friends with the heart, making the world one family’.
The Taishan Hall is directly above the ‘Yellow River Hall’ on the first floor. It takes on the trend of high mountains and low waters, conforming to nature. The Taishan Hall is an important place in this building and is the place where the 24 leaders attending the Qingdao Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization gather. The design uses the exquisite Dongyang wood carving decoration of our country to fully demonstrate the profound, far-reaching and profound historical heritage of Chinese culture.
The Qilu Hall is the place where the summit’s signing ceremony and press conference are held. It takes horizontal straight lines as the decorative composition of the entire space. The individual ceiling shapes are slightly raised. Combined with a reasonable layout of lighting, the overall space is rigorous and restrained, solemn and comfortable.
The marine multi-functional hall is located 300 meters southwest of the main venue of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, it has a seamless blend of sea and sky and a wide field of vision. Through the renovation and upgrading of the internal use functions and exterior shape of the original building, the building’s functions meet the needs of conference banquets. The main building materials are lightweight steel structure and membrane structure. The shape is like a flexible sail in the waves, highlighting the unique charm of Qingdao, a famous marine city and the capital of sailing.
