The Qingdao Post and Telecommunication Museum, located near Zhanqiao, features a red-walled European-style building and is one of the earliest post and telecommunication buildings still standing in Qingdao. Visitors can explore various interesting vintage telephones and see the restored office of Kong Xiangxi from the 1920s. Don’t forget to write a postcard to your future self. The building housing the museum was originally constructed in 1901 and was once the site of the Jiaoao German Empire Post Office.
The museum is mainly accessible on the first, second, and fourth floors: the first floor lobby recreates the scene of an old post office from the early 20th century; the second floor is a historical exhibit displaying items and materials; the fourth floor is an attic with a café. Stepping into the museum feels like traveling back to an old post office from a hundred years ago, with high window bars and rustic wooden tables and chairs, filled with a sense of history. Today, the museum operates a slow mail post office where you can write a postcard to be mailed to yourself in the future. The service allows for letter preservation, with mailing times ranging from one year to five, ten years, or even further into the future. The second floor serves as the museum’s exhibition area, with thousands of images showcasing the urban transformation of Qingdao over a century, as well as the development of the communication industry. The museum also displays telephones from over twenty countries from different periods, including a particularly precious magneto wall telephone produced by Ericsson in 1905, known for its exquisite craftsmanship and its church-roof-like design. The fourth floor is a fully wooden German-style attic, with wooden walls and deep wood colors, surrounded by the mottled traces of over a century. A German-style café bar is located here, where you can enjoy coffee or a dark beer, offering a very atmospheric experience. Opening hours are from May 1st to October 31st, 09:30-12:00 and 13:00-18:00; from November 1st to April 30th, 10:00-12:00 and 13:00-17:00.Qingdao Post and Telecommunication Museum
