The Tianhou Palace takes worshipping and sacrificing to Mazu as the core and has formed a unique Tianhou culture. Mazu is one of the important deities in folk beliefs in coastal areas of China and is respected as the ‘Goddess of the Sea’. Qingdao Tianhou Palace is not only a place for inheriting Mazu culture but also an important display window for Qingdao folk culture. The Qingdao Folk Custom Museum is built relying on the time-honored Tianhou Palace and is a window to show the historical changes of Qingdao city. The museum holds various characteristic exhibitions all year round, such as ‘Mazu Culture Exhibition’, ‘Folk Currency Exhibition’, ‘Chinese Folk Toy Exhibition’, ‘Rural Dwelling Exhibition’, ‘Dragon Boat Festival Customs Exhibition’, ‘Tomb Sweeping Festival Customs Exhibition’, etc. At the same time, activities such as commemorating Mazu’s birthday and worshipping when Mazu ascended to immortality are held regularly. The New Year folk culture temple fair of Tianhou Palace is a typical collective activity in the traditional folk customs that have been followed for hundreds of years in Qingdao.
