Qingdao West Coast New Area is located on the west bank of Qingdao City, Shandong Province, encompassing the entire administrative region of Huangdao District, including Qingdao Economic and Technological Development Zone and the former Jiaonan City, with a land area of approximately 2096 square kilometers and a maritime area of about 5000 square kilometers.
The strategic positioning of the West Coast New Area is to be a leader in marine science and technology innovation, a strategic support base for deep-sea development, a demonstration zone for military-civilian integration innovation, a pilot zone for international cooperation in the marine economy, and a trial zone for integrated land-sea development.
The West Coast New Area is the 9th national-level new area approved by the State Council, situated within the Shandong Peninsula Blue Economic Zone and the Bohai Rim Economic Circle, at the core between the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and the Yangtze River Delta metropolitan areas, facing Japan and South Korea across the sea, and possessing a strategic advantage in connecting the east and west, and linking the north and south. It is the main maritime outlet of the Yellow River basin and an important eastern endpoint of the Eurasian Continental Bridge.
In 2015, it was selected as one of the first batch of national ecological protection and construction demonstration areas. In 2015, there were 67 investment projects from Fortune Global 500 companies. Over two years, more than 1000 industrial projects were introduced and constructed, with more than 340 starting construction and more than 160 being completed and put into production. In February 2017, Qingdao West Coast New Area was selected as a key city for PPP innovation work in the field of national major municipal engineering.
