The Qingteng Book House was originally named ‘Liuhua Book House’. It is not far from Lu Xun’s former residence but is much quieter. This is the place where Xu Wei, one of the top ten ancient painters in China, was born and studied. Tourists who come here are all deeply moved by his impoverished, unrestrained, and unafraid-of-powerful life. Entering the door is a gable wall with the three characters ‘Zizai Rock’ on it. The book house faces south and has two rooms in total. The front room faces south. Outside the window is a small patio. There is a green vine on the west side. The back room faces north and is now opened as an exhibition room of Xu Wei’s cultural relics. Here, you can not only see some of Xu Wei’s calligraphy and painting works but also learn about his bumpy life. The couplet in front of the door reads, ‘A few ramshackle houses, a person with a southern accent and a northern tone.’ This is indeed a vivid portrayal of this great painter-calligrapher. The Qingteng Book House is not large. Compared with other former residences of celebrities in Shaoxing, it is even a bit shabby. If you are interested in the history of Chinese calligraphy and painting or want to find a secluded place, this is a good choice. The narrow lanes leading here are also worth noting. The vicissitudes of the ancient well and the house gates branded with the marks of the times are quite interesting.
