Fushan Zen Temple, a county cultural relics protection unit and one of the top hundred famous temples in China, is located at the foot of Mianniu Mountain in Fushan Township, Qingtian County. It faces north and is flanked by villagers’ houses on the east and west sides. Approximately 150 meters in front of the temple’s southern open space stands the single-arched Le’an Bridge, constructed with bluestone, with railings on both sides featuring relief carvings of flowers and birds, and lotus petal decorations on the pillars, echoing the temple’s grandeur. Originally built during the late Song Dynasty and early Yuan Dynasty, the temple boasts red walls, grey tiles, and soaring eaves, exuding a majestic presence. The temple gate prominently displays the words ‘Blessing to the Hometown’ written by the Dharma Master Sha Menghai. Inside, there are inscriptions by famous figures such as Zhao Puchu with the word ‘Zen Temple’. The temple features an ancient bridge, a ‘Release of Life Pond’ filled with thousands of red carps, and towering bell and drum towers on either side, housing a copper bell and a giant drum. The main hall enshrines Li Bi, a three-dynasty veteran of the Tang Dynasty, who was known as the ‘Prime Minister in White’ for his service to Emperors Suzong, Daizong, and Dezong. Inside the temple, massive candles stand like a forest, with the heaviest pair weighing 1200 kilograms and capable of burning for a year, a unique spectacle in the Jiangnan region. The temple is open to visitors from 8:00 to 16:30 all year round.
