Qingzhou Island, also known as the current Qingzhou location, is situated to the northwest of the Macau Peninsula. It was once a small island with a solitary hill standing tall at no more than 50 meters, surrounded by water and covered with lush greenery. The Portuguese referred to it as the Green Island. According to the ‘Xiangshan County Annals’, ‘Qingzhou Mountain is located about two miles north of Macau and four miles south of the former Mountain Fortress.
‘ In 1555 (the 34th year of the Jiajing era in the Ming Dynasty), Portuguese missionaries built a church on the island, which was later destroyed. Qingzhou Mountain was originally under the jurisdiction of Xiangshan County. In 1886 (the 12th year of the Guangxu era in the Qing Dynasty), Chinese residents opened the Qingzhou Cement Factory on the island, which was one of the earliest cement factories in China. In 1890 (the 16th year of the Guangxu era), the Portuguese in Macau built a seawall extending towards Qingzhou Island, but the British who took over the cement factory opposed it, resulting in only a bridge being built for connection. In 1923, the Portuguese in Macau began the construction of the Qingzhou seawall project, gradually connecting it with the Macau Peninsula, thus forming today’s Qingzhou area.
