Qingzhou Museum is located in the northwest corner of the picturesque ancient Qingzhou City, adjacent to Fan Gongting Park. Although the museum is not large, it houses rare cultural relics such as the Ming Dynasty Zhao Bingzhong’s top scholar’s scroll, the Han Dynasty ‘Yi Sun Zi’ jade disc, and a large kneeling stone figurine from the Eastern Han Dynasty. It also features the distinctive Longxing Temple Buddhist sculpture group, with a rich and extraordinary collection, making it a county-level museum among national museums. Qingzhou, one of the ancient ‘Nine Provinces,’ has accumulated a millennium of culture and history, so most of the museum’s artifacts are unearthed locally. It is recommended to rent a guide device inside the museum for a detailed understanding of the cultural relics, which costs 10 yuan per device, requiring valid identification and a deposit of 200 yuan. Hiring a guide for a more vivid experience costs 100 yuan for a 45-minute Chinese tour. Please note that photography is prohibited inside the museum.
Qingzhou Museum is an enclosed antique-style building with a classical and elegant appearance. The exhibition area has two floors, divided into the Qingzhou Brief History Exhibition Hall, Longxing Temple Buddhist Sculpture Boutique Hall, and display halls for ceramics, ancient calligraphy and painting, stone carving sculptures, stone steles, jade, and bronze statues. Among them, the distinctive feature is the hundreds of stone Buddhist sculptures unearthed at the Longxing Temple site. Longxing Temple was first built during the Northern Wei Dynasty, and the unearthed Buddha statues are beautifully shaped and exquisitely carved, with styles from the Northern Wei to the Northern Song periods. Interestingly, the Buddhas all have smiles on their faces, which is very rare. Due to the protective burial by religious figures during the war and the late unearthing, some of the robes are still red, some gold plating remains, and even some facial features are well preserved.
The ancient calligraphy and painting hall displays Zhao Bingzhong’s top scholar’s palace examination paper, which is a national palace examination paper original and also a treasure of the museum. This well-preserved top scholar’s paper is written in small regular script, with neat handwriting and 2460 characters without any mistakes. The paper has the imperial script of Emperor Wanli Zhu Houjun at that time, as well as the names and positions of several examiners. The ‘Yi Sun Zi’ jade disc from the Han Dynasty tomb unearthed in the jade exhibition hall is also not to be missed. The whole jade is made of Hetian black jade, with the through-carved seal script ‘Yi Sun Zi’ meaning ‘May descendants live in harmony and prosperity,’ not only with exquisite carving skills but also as the only known Han disc with characters. In addition, the museum also has art treasures such as the Northern Qi Fu Family portrait stone, Qiu Ying’s ‘Along the River During the Qingming Festival,’ Jin black glaze carved flower pot, Tang Sancai bowl, and other classic items from the Ming Dynasty Hengwang Mansion, such as crouching lions and bronze cranes, which are also worth seeing.
