Qiyun Mountain has been active since the Tang Dynasty. Some spectacular cliff carvings can be seen on the mountain. The Danxia landform brings a round red mountain body to Qiyun Mountain, which forms a sharp contrast with the verdant vegetation on the mountain. Qiyun Mountain is 33 kilometers west of Huangshan urban area, with an altitude of 585 meters. The mountain is not high but relatively large. It is divided into four scenic areas: Yuehua Street Scenic Area, Upstairs Scenic Area, Yunyan Lake Scenic Area, and Hengjiang Scenic Area. If you think it is ‘just a small mountain’, then you have only visited the essence section of the front mountain, Yuehua Street Scenic Area. This is the content of a one-day tour. For a two-day tour, first visit the Yuehua Street Scenic Area. On the second day, you can go to the Upstairs Scenic Area at the back mountain. As for the Yunyan Lake Scenic Area, it is really too far away, and generally there will be no tourists going there. The hiking entrance of Qiyun Mountain is at Dengfeng Bridge, which is 600 meters away from the lower station of the cableway. When taking a car to Qiyun Mountain, tell the driver where you want to get off. It takes about more than an hour to walk up the mountain and reach the upper station of the cableway. It is recommended to take the cableway when going up the mountain. You can enjoy the idyllic scenery at the foot of the mountain on the cableway. From the upper station of the cableway to Feiyun Pavilion, remember to look back at the foot of the mountain. The best time to visit Qiyun Mountain is in April when rape flowers are in full bloom. The golden flower fields and Hui-style villages with white walls and black tiles are like a traditional Chinese painting. The front mountain mainly sees cliff carvings, especially the True Immortal Cave Dwelling, which is very spectacular. There are caves all over the cliff. On the top are the four characters ‘Heaven Opens and God Shows’. In the caves, various immortals are enshrined. From the top of the cliff, pearl springs are constantly dripping into the clear pool at the bottom of the cliff. Then walk to Yuehua Street. At the end of the street, through the gate is the gourd-shaped stone archway ‘Little Pot Heaven’, and you reach a grotto. Look carefully at the top of the grotto. There are footprints left by dinosaurs in ancient times. It takes about half an hour to climb from Yuehua Street to the peak of Qiyun Mountain. Most tourists return the same way after visiting Yuehua Street. If you want to go to the back mountain, you can stay overnight in Yuehua Street, otherwise there is not enough time. Yuehua Street is a village on the mountainside with limited reception capacity. Although there are not many tourists staying overnight on the mountain, it is better to make an appointment for accommodation in advance. There are also old houses such as slightly better-conditioned hotels, such as the century-old Changsheng Tower. The accommodation conditions are average, but you can see the sea of clouds in front of the building. Walking from the front mountain towards Yuehua Street, there is always Xianglu Peak on the right side. Because of its exquisite shape, it is the representative of all the peaks of Qiyun Mountain. There is a pavilion on the peak. There is a road leading to the peak from the True Immortal Cave Dwelling, but the road is not easy to walk. It is recommended to put your luggage at the accommodation in Yuehua Street and then return to the climbing place. If you don’t know where to climb, you can ask the hotel owner or villagers in more detail. Don’t climb on rainy days as the road is slippery. On the second day, go to the Upstairs at the back mountain. There is no supply place along the way. Be sure to prepare enough water and dry food. After watching the sunrise on the peak in the morning, return to Yuehua Street and walk in the direction of Yuxu Palace. There is a fork in the road leading to Fang La Stronghold in front of Yuxu Palace. If you have good physical strength and can walk quickly, you can go and take a look. Otherwise, it is recommended to go straight to the Upstairs.
All are walking in the mountains and can no longer see the scenery at the foot of the mountain. There are very few people along this road, giving a feeling of ‘the whole mountain is yours’. On the way, you will pass the downhill road leading to the bamboo raft dock. If there is a mountain guard on duty at the pavilion at the intersection, you can leave your luggage there and pick it up when you come back and go down the mountain from here. Further ahead, there is a fork in the road. The right side leads to the reservoir. The left side with a covered bridge is the correct way. When reaching the upper and lower floors of the cave formed naturally at the Upper and Lower Floors area, backpackers will set up tents here. The terrain is flat and can shelter from the wind and rain. Go down the mountain along the previous road leading to the bamboo raft dock. Taking a bamboo raft can drift all the way to Dengfeng Bridge. Dengfeng Bridge is a stone bridge built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. On the opposite bank is a Huizhou-style village. When rape blossoms are in full bloom, the scenery in this area is no less inferior to those popular tourist attractions in Anhui and Wuyuan for seeing rape blossoms. When the sun sets in the west and night falls, the Qiyun Town is ablaze with lights and extremely lively. The iron flower show of Qiyun blooms romantically in mid-air; lantern fish lamps parade through the streets carrying the blessings of Huizhou for six hundred years; standing on Dengfeng Bridge, you can also see a hundred-meter golden dragon carrying fireworks winding forward.
