The Quaternary Glacial Relics Exhibition Hall in China is located in Modoukou, Shijingshan District, situated at the southern foot of Cuihuishan in the western suburbs of Beijing, connected to the Badachu Park mountain range, and adjacent to cultural landscapes such as Fahai Temple, Longquan Temple, Cheng’en Temple, and Tianyi Tomb. It is 20 kilometers away from the urban area of Beijing, with the Yongding River diversion canal passing by its front door.
The Quaternary glacial bedrock ice溜 surface relics originated during the cold periods of significant climatic fluctuations in the Quaternary, when the snowfall increased dramatically, far exceeding the melting rate of snow. Consequently, in areas with suitable altitude on the mountains, the accumulated snow turned into ice. When the thickness and weight of the ice became unbearable for the mountain, the ice mass began to move downward along the mountain slope under its own gravity, forming glaciers. The bedrock ice溜 surface is the rock that was carved and scraped by the glaciers as they passed. The exhibition hall displays the basic knowledge of the Quaternary glaciers, the establishment and development of Mr. Li Siguang’s Quaternary glaciology theory, research and application of the glacial system, and the role of glaciers in the construction of the national economy, as well as the distribution and survey of Quaternary glaciers in China. Most of the exhibits are photographic materials of glacial relics and some moraine stone specimens. In the field of science popularization facing society, the museum can fully leverage its advantages with thematic exhibitions such as ‘The Impact of Climate and Environment on Human Survival and Development’, ‘How Humans Can Develop Civilization in Future Ice Ages’, and ‘The Glacier Phenomenon’s Function in Storing Energy for Humanity and Its Potential Huge Threat to Human Civilization’, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of Quaternary glaciology.
