Piano Virtuoso – Ted Rosenthal

Ted Rosenthal is one of the most significant jazz pianists and composers of his generation. As a soloist, Ted actively tours the world with his trio and collaborates with numerous jazz legends, including Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, and James Moody.

A Winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, Ted has released 15 CDs as the main creator. Among them, his work (Rhapsody in Gershwin) features his jazz trio arrangement of Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue,’ topping the jazz album sales on iTunes and Amazon.

Ted’s solo album ‘The 3 B’s’ received a 4-star rating from DownBeat magazine. It features Bud Powell, Bill Evans, and his improvisations on Beethoven themes. “In Ted’s hands, all this music sounds as if it came from the same muse, a sign of an artist who is both technically skilled and imaginative.”

Ted has also been invited to perform by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, and Dallas Black Dance Theater. His piano and orchestra concerto (The Survivor) has been performed by the Manhattan Jazz Philharmonic and Rockland Symphony, with Ted himself as the pianist.

Ted premiered his second jazz piano concerto ‘Jazz Fantasy’ with The Park Avenue Chamber Symphony. Ted serves as the artistic director of Jazz at the Riverdale Y and Jazz at Dicapo in New York. He has also performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Jon Faddis, and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band.

Furthermore, Ted has always been the preferred pianist for many jazz vocalists, including Helen Merrill, Ann Hampton Callaway, Kurt Elling, and Barbara Cook. He has participated in Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz program on National Public Radio and performed with David Sanborn on NBC’s Night Music program. Ted’s orchestral performances include solo and featured appearances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Ted played Gershwin’s Concerto in F major and Rhapsody in Blue at the opening concert of the 2015-16 season of the 92nd Street Y. The New York Times described his playing as “known for its talent and languidly sexy expressiveness”. In 2014, Ted played Rhapsody in Blue at a concert celebrating the 90th anniversary of the premiere of Rhapsody in Blue at the Town Hall. Ted holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music. He is active in jazz education and is a faculty member at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. He also serves on the boards of these two schools and has received the Presidential Medal for Distinguished Teacher Service. During his tours, Ted conducts jazz workshops around the world. He is a contributing editor for Piano and Keyboard magazine and has published piano arrangements and feature articles in Piano Today, The Piano Stylist, and The Juilliard Journal. He is also a Steinway artist.

Bass – Brian Hurley is a Canadian jazz bassist and composer who has been active on the stages of Montreal, New York, and Shanghai for many years. World-renowned guitarist SONNY GREENWICH calls him “one of the most important basses in Canada”, and Irving Block (Montreal Gazette) says: “He is one of Canada’s most creative bassists.”

He has always exuded a unique charm on stage, with his beautiful melodies captivating every listener present.

Drums – Dimitry Strelianny was born in Tomsk, Russia. He lived there for five years, and his initial musical inspiration came from his brother and sister’s vinyl records, ranging from classical to avant-garde music.

After listening to performances by masters from New York such as Max Roach, Art Blakey, Ray Brown, the Thad Jones – Mel Lewis Orchestra, and Lee Morgan, Dimitry knew he wanted to develop in such a place. He felt he needed to live in this atmosphere to grow musically.

He then began studying at the Moscow Conservatory and later, in 2008, entered the Amsterdam Conservatory.

With an explosive desire for knowledge, lightning-fast speed, masterful rhythm patterns, and beat notation, Dimitry presents a rare sense of elegance in his music. His artistic originality is reflected in his unparalleled ability. His technique, the feeling of wielding drumsticks, and extraordinary capabilities fill his music with solemnity and elegant resonance.
