One of the New Ten Views of West Lake, located on a small green island in the middle of West Lake. During the fifth year of the Qing Jiaqing era, Zhejiang Governor Ruan Yuan dredged the West Lake, and more than 104,000 tons of silt were excavated by laborers to form this island. Ruan Yuan, styled Boyuan, and known as Yuntai, was a native of YiZheng, Jiangsu, and a renowned scholar of the Qing Dynasty.

To commemorate his contributions to the cultural development of Zhejiang, the preservation of ancient texts, and the management of West Lake, the island was named ‘Ruan Gong Dun’. Due to the soft soil not being suitable for villa construction, it remained desolate for over a hundred years. It wasn’t until 1982 that, for the development of tourism resources, over 240 square meters of infrastructure were built on this 8.

5-acre island, including ‘Yi Yun Pavilion’, ‘Cloud Water Residence’, and ‘Huan Bi Xiao Zhu’. Later, a fishing area and ‘Huan Bi Manor’ were added, creating a unique waterside garden with ‘green trees, flowers, and bamboo houses’. Open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day, viewable from a distance, but not accessible by visitors.
