Ya Po Ching Square, which translates to ‘Mountain Spring’ in Portuguese, was once the main water source of Macau, making it an early settlement point for the Portuguese. The area still retains its Portuguese-style architecture, standing in contrast to the grand residence of the renowned Chinese modern thinker Zheng Guanying, showcasing the harmonious coexistence of two distinct cultures.
A series of renovations have been carried out to preserve the cultural characteristics of this district. Two century-old banyan trees in Ya Po Ching Square have been preserved, classical street lamps have been added, and the pavement has been replaced with marble. Nearby, you can also find the precious buildings of the ‘Historic Centre of Macau’, such as the A-Ma Temple, Zheng’s Mansion, and St. Lawrence’s Church. The area is open all year round, accessible 24/7.
