Sacred Heart Cathedral in Guangzhou

The Sacred Heart Cathedral, also known as the Stone House Church, is one of the largest churches in Guangzhou and stands as one of the largest Gothic structures in China, as well as one of the four all-stone Gothic cathedrals in the world. Many people come here to capture the exterior for memories, and it is a popular spot for newlyweds to take wedding photos (only exterior photography is allowed, no interior shooting).

Historically, the cathedral served as the governor’s mansion during the late Qing Dynasty, and it was converted into a church by the invading British forces in 1863. The cathedral’s tower reaches a height of 58.5 meters, exuding grandeur, and is entirely constructed from granite. During non-Mass times, the cathedral is open for casual visits, but photography is prohibited inside. During Mass, movement within the church is restricted.

It embodies all the compositional elements of Gothic architecture, including the stained glass windows characteristic of early architectural style and the twin bell tower spires of the middle and late architectural styles. The cathedral’s facade features a pair of towering twin spires with four large bronze bells imported from France. The tranquil and solemn atmosphere of the church is enhanced by its authentic layout.

You may enter and sit in any seat, experiencing the sacredness and serenity brought by the architecture. On the third Sunday of each month, the cathedral is closed all day; specific operating conditions are subject to the day’s opening status. There are multiple Chinese Masses on holidays, Sundays, and Saturdays, a Korean Mass at 16:00 on Saturdays, and an English Mass at 15:30 on Sundays.
