Guanshan in Chenghai is a famous hometown of overseas Chinese. In particular, the Shenshan Scenic Area within its territory. Although the mountain is not high, it has steep peaks, verdant trees, beautiful scenery and many historical sites. It is known as one of the eight ancient scenic spots in Chenghai and is called ‘Guanshan Surrounded by Greenery’. Since the establishment of Chenghai County in 1568 (the second year of Longqing in the Ming Dynasty), when the county seat had not been built, Magistrate Cai Nan chose Guanshan as the place for political discussions.

Later, through generations of famous officials, sages and poets, who either built or opened up, sang and chanted, leaving a large number of precious historical and cultural heritages, making the beauty of Shenshan Mountain even more enhanced and renowned in neighboring areas. The ancient nunnery on Shenshan Mountain is at the western foot of Shenshan Mountain. Also known as the Stone Buddha Temple.

Guanshan Academy is located at the foot of Shenshan Mountain. It was built in 1569 (the third year of Longqing in the Ming Dynasty). It is a large three-entry hard-top ancestral hall-style school building built against the mountain. In the past, it was a place for promoting education and cultivating talents in Chenghai and the first academy in Chenghai. In the Qing Dynasty, ‘Guanshan Surrounded by Greenery’ was one of the eight scenic spots in Chenghai.

In 1928, the ‘Rice-producing Stone in Shenshan Mountain’ was one of the eight scenic spots in Shantou. In 1984, the cliff carvings on Shenshan Mountain were announced as cultural relic protection units by the People’s Government of Chenghai County. In 2006, it was rated as one of the first batch of municipal-level scenic areas in Shantou. The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the opening situation on that day.
