Sai Kung, located in the eastern part of the Kowloon Peninsula in the New Territories, boasts stunning scenery and captivating coastlines. It is a popular weekend destination for many citizens who visit in groups to enjoy seafood or go out to sea. The area is marked by an intricately carved archway, a symbol of Sai Kung.
Narrow streets in Sai Kung retain the charm of its past, with rows of live fish shops along the coastline on Market Street, where fresh ingredients are caught and prepared on the spot, making the local seafood feasts highly renowned. Large colorful lobsters, crabs, shellfish, and various fish are all premium ingredients. Visitors can also purchase these at the local market and have them prepared by the restaurant. Additionally, the floating platforms known as ‘fish rafts,’ constructed by fishermen from plastic barrels, are a distinctive feature of Sai Kung.

When tasting seafood in Sai Kung, opt for open-air dining, surrounded by tables with large umbrellas for shade, enjoying the sea breeze and the view of the azure ocean and sky, with the occasional passing cruise ship. Behind you, the seafood restaurants feature massive glass tanks resembling an underwater world.

Boating tours and island explorations are also popular in Sai Kung. Visitors can rent a sampan at the public pier to circumnavigate the islands and take in the sea and sky as one. For a different experience, one can also take a boat to Tap Mun Island. If you are physically fit, hiking along the MacLehose Trail to Long Ke Wan with its beautiful scenery of blue waters and white sands is an option. Strolling along the beach or cycling around, watching the sunrise and sunset over the waves, makes for a romantic day.

At night, there are other activities available, such as renting a boat for squid fishing. The area is open all year round, 24 hours a day, but the specific operating status is subject to the day’s conditions.

Essential Tips:

1. Before visiting the nearby islands of Sai Kung, it is recommended to check the weather conditions on the Hong Kong Observatory website. During high tides, the sandbar of Bridge Island may be completely submerged, affecting the return route and time.

2. Sai Kung has good water quality, making it suitable for obtaining a diving license.

3. There are usually more tourists on weekends and public holidays, so be mindful of potential traffic congestion.
