Sam Tung Uk Museum

Sam Tung Uk Museum is one of the ancient walled villages in Hong Kong. It is a typical Hakka walled village. Although it has a history of more than 200 years, it is still well preserved. The excellent restoration work has won the museum the ‘Pacific Heritage Award’ of the Pacific Asia Travel Association in 1990. The architectural layout of Sam Tung Uk Museum is like a chessboard, symmetrical on the left and right. On the central axis are the front hall, middle hall and ancestral hall respectively. On both sides are four independent living rooms. The transverse houses on the left, right and at the back enclose the entire village. The museum has exhibition halls and lecture halls, displaying ancient furniture, handicrafts, farm tools and daily necessities of Hakka people. At the same time, it witnesses the process of Tsuen Wan transforming from an agricultural area into a modern town. In June 2016, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Office established the ‘Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre’ in Sam Tung Uk Museum as its exhibition and education centre. Through diversified education and promotion activities, including holding exhibitions, lectures, seminars, demonstrations by inheritors and workshops, etc., public awareness and understanding of intangible cultural heritage are enhanced.
