The San Yuan Li People’s Anti-British Struggle Memorial Hall was established to commemorate the resistance of the San Yuan Li people against the British during the First Opium War. It is located at the San Yuan Ancient Temple in San Yuan Li. The ancient temple was originally built in the early Qing Dynasty. During the Opium War, the people of San Yuan Li and 103 other villages took an oath here to resist the British. They fought at Niu Lan Gang and defeated the invading forces, then surrounded the British army’s headquarters at the Si Fang Fort, driving the British invaders out of Guangzhou. This marked the first victory of the Chinese people against foreign aggression in modern history. Later, the San Yuan Li anti-British crowd was honored as the ‘Ping Ying Group’. The hall displays the ‘History of the Anti-British Struggle of the People of San Yuan Li’, among other exhibits. The former site of the San Yuan Li Ping Ying Group has been announced by the State Council as the first batch of first-class national key cultural relics protection units. The hall is open all year round from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-18:00; it is closed all day on Mondays. The specific opening hours are subject to the on-site notice at the scenic spot.
