The Sanya Nature Museum is situated within the 5A-level tourist area of Nanshan Big and Small Caves Scenic Area in Sanya, a tropical coastal tourist city in China. It covers an area of 2,400 square meters. Designed and constructed by the Beijing Natural History Museum, the exhibition hall’s design and construction meet international first-class standards.
The museum’s collection includes Liaoxi Jehol biota fossils from the Cretaceous period, referred to by former U.S. President Clinton as ‘the astonishing discovery of the 20th century’; fauna from Guanling in Guizhou, Xixia in Henan, and Shanwang in Shandong, as well as biota from Tongxin in Ningxia, and other regions such as Inner Mongolia and Gansu; unique specimens of flora and fauna from Hainan, including the invaluable Hainan submerged wood known as the ‘Eastern Divine Wood’; and the exquisite Huangshan yellow waxstone from Wuzhi Mountain, totaling over two thousand pieces. Among them, more than 800 pieces are considered national treasures, with some being unique in the international context, making the museum a leader in its field both domestically and internationally.
The Sanya Nature Museum houses a multitude of fossils. All of them are genuine except for those specifically marked for comparison with fake fossils. The museum pledges a reward of 100,000 yuan for anyone who finds a fake fossil, making it the first museum in China to openly declare ‘no forgeries.’ This commitment further establishes it as one of the distinctive and significant museums in the country. The museum is open all year round from 08:30 to 17:30. Please consult the scenic area for specific opening times.
