Sanyan Temple is situated within the territory of Julu Township, 44 kilometers west of Lishui City, and is adjacent to the scenic area of Dongxi Rock. The mountain is majestic and steep, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains from its peak, with lush greenery and a refreshing atmosphere. According to the Republic of China’s ‘Xuanping County Annals’: ‘Sanyan is seventy miles east of the county, to the left of Fuyan (Tianshi Tower), with cliffs rising a thousand feet, and a cave in the mountainside, over fifteen zhang deep and broad, where residents have established a temple to worship Lord Hu.’ The Lord Hu Cave is also known as the Red Army Cave. On September 10, 1930, the command of the 13th Army of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army camped in this cave. The back of the stele records the activities of the Red Army at that time. Adjacent to Sanyan Temple is the Mayao Peak; climbing up, one gasps in awe at the sight of a sheer cliff-like abyss on one side of Mayao, with a narrow, deep, and long ravine between two rocks. On one side of the ravine stands a towering red flag-like cliff, 152 meters high and over 400 meters wide. Other notable features include Tianshi Tower, the towering red flag, Shenlong Peak, the linked caves, Fanzeng Peak, Chi Lake’s deep blue, Chiyan Temple, and Ruomao Peak. From a distance, the scenic area appears as a series of peaks connected, with mist and clouds swirling like ribbons, as if fairies are gathering, each showing their skills, weaving an infinitely charming net.
