According to legend, He Sunü is a famous medicine fairy. When she was thirteen years old, one day she went alone to pick herbs in Shirengling, Nankun Mountain (now Paitan Town). Accidentally, she fell into a deep spring pool filled with dense mist and fainted. After waking up and climbing ashore, she found that she didn’t feel any pain.
It turned out that the collected herbs fell into the hot spring and soaked, producing a magical effect. Because He Sunü can identify various precious herbs in the mountains and pick them for the nearby people, and can predict people’s affairs. Therefore, people around her regard her as a divine being and respectfully call her ‘He Xiangu’. He Xiangu often uses the opportunity of treating people’s illnesses to persuade people to do good and stop evil. There is the ‘Song of Exhorting the World’ as proof: ‘The wicked are feared by people but not by heaven. The kind are bullied by people but not by heaven. Good and evil are clearly reported by heaven. The reward is far in descendants and near in oneself.’ Many people took the herbal medicine prescribed by her, and indeed all their illnesses were cured. And after following her teachings, they did good deeds and accumulated virtues. At the same time, He Sunü often persuaded the nearby villagers to soak in the pool to strengthen their bodies, cultivate their minds, and this custom has continued to this day. Later, people learned that there were three kinds of medicines that fell into the pool together with He Sunü at the beginning, namely dandelion, white quartz, and purple quartz. Because each medicine contains the character ‘ying’, later that pool was praised as ‘Sanying Hot Spring’.
